Breast Augmentation: How do I plan my surgery?
In your initial consultation, Dr. Grado will evaluate your breast size, skin envelope, and breast tissue volume. He will explain which surgical techniques are most appropriate for you, based on these findings.
- “Before my breast augmentation, I didn't feel feminine and would never wear a swimming suit.”

Dr. Grado will also explain the type of anesthesia to be used, the type of facility where the surgery will be performed, and the costs involved. Because most insurance companies do not consider breast augmentation to be medically necessary, carriers generally do not cover the cost of this procedure.
PREPARING FOR YOUR SURGERY
Dr. Grado’s staff will give you instructions to prepare for surgery, including guidelines on eating and drinking, smoking, and taking or avoiding certain vitamins and medications.
While making preparations, be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home after your surgery and to help you out for a few days, if needed.
The Operation
Dr. Grado performs most of these operations at the Surgical Center of Cedar Rapids. This is a relatively new, state of the art facility located conveniently near St. Luke’s Hospital. Occasionally, the surgery may be done as an inpatient in a hospital.
Breast augmentation will be performed with a general anesthesia, so you'll sleep through the entire operation.
The method of inserting and positioning your implant will depend on your anatomy and Dr. Grado’s recommendation. The incision is usually made in the crease where the breast meets the chest. Every effort will be made to assure that the incision is placed so resulting scars will be as inconspicuous as possible. The length of the incision is about 1 ½ inches.
Working through the incision, Dr. Grado will lift your breast tissue and skin to create a pocket, generally underneath your chest wall muscle (the pectoral muscle).
Placement behind the muscle may be more painful for a few days after surgery than placement directly under the breast tissue. This placement generally allow for a warmer, softer breast with a less palpable implant.
The surgery usually takes one hour to complete. Stitches are used to close the incisions, which may also be taped for greater support. A gauze bandage may be applied over your breasts to help with healing.
