Breast Augmentation: Am I the right age?

Women must be at least 18 years of age to have this operation for cosmetic reasons. Exceptions are made for those younger where marked breast asymmetry exists with one breast being dramatically larger than the other. This can only be done where the patient is able to understand the consequences of the procedure and the risks involved.

Many women have the operation in their early twenties. At that point in life, they realize that their breasts will never fill out to where they feel proportional in size. Many women have worn padded bras for some time and know exactly what size implant it will take to help them feel that their breast size matches the rest of their body. If a pregnancy is planned within a year or so, Dr. Grado may encourage you to wait until after that pregnancy since the pregnancy may impact breast size or shape.

Many women come in after having their children. At that point, it is time to get their bodies back into the shape and proportion they had prior to their children. These women come into the office in their 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s. Others come in following weight loss that results in a disproportionate loss of breast volume.

Breast augmentation is even performed in older women who feel it is finally time to do something for themselves. They have spent years raising a family, running a home and working outside the home. They have always thought of others first but now it is time to take care of themselves.
